The Celebration of Freedom

P08-C-1.jpg

OH, THE SEA:

Meru Betiri National Park employees release 1,015 tukik (sea turtle hatchlings) on sea turtle beach in Sukamade in Banyuwangi, East Java, on Sunday. The national park claims more hatchlings are released at the annual event than at any other in the world. (JP/Iman D. Nugroho)

The Meru Betiri National Park southeast of Jember or northeast of Banyuwangi, occupies mountainous area. To the south is the Indian Ocean. Forests surround the park on the three other sides. The reserve is inhabited by a great variety of wildlife, including tigers, monkeys, muncak, panthers and civet cats. In the surroundings are rubber and coffee plantations. There are watchtowers, paths and small boats for rent. Meru Bay is found not far from here.

Aww, what a cute sight. That's sure a lot of baby turtles.

Good to see them get to sea safely without being hunted down by birds!

Thanks for posting such a great event- I lived in Jakarta for a little while so I'm really pleased to see such environmental awareness going on!
